Samanid Mausoleum

This is the 9th century mausoleum of Ismoili Somoni, the founder of the Samanid dynasty, located in Bukhara, in what is now Uzbekistan. The Samanid dynasty was the first dynasty to reestablish Persian as the official language after over a century of Arab domination in the region. Tajiks and other Persians credit the Samanids with rescuing Persian civilization after Arab attempts to wipe it off the face of the Earth. His mausoleum was one of two buildings that were not razed when the Mongols destroyed Bukhara in the 13th century, and survived only because a sandstorm had hidden it from view prior to the Mongols' arrival.
